EIC convenes corporates and innovators at The Impact Circle to catalyse pilots and procurement paths
Turning research and deep technology into market-scale business requires more than grants. It requires commercial partners, procurement pathways and technical integration with incumbent systems. The European Innovation Council (EIC) staged a concentrated attempt to create those connections on 22 and 23 July 2026, running five Circles of its Multi-Corporate Day in parallel at The Impact Circle, an innovation strand embedded within the Love Tomorrow Summit in La Hulpe and Boom, Belgium.
Across two days more than 55 EIC-backed start-ups and scale-ups from 20 countries presented to and met representatives from major global and regional corporations. The corporate roster included AB InBev, Ajinomoto, Cargill, Daikin, Galp, imec, JETRO, JX Advanced Metals Corporation, Procter & Gamble, Puratos, The Coca-Cola Company and Tomorrowland. Sessions combined reverse pitches from corporates, pitching slots for the EIC companies, expert workshops, and pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings aimed at concrete business outcomes.
How the event was structured and the EIC’s role
The activity was organised under the EIC Corporate Partnership Programme, one of the EIC Business Acceleration Services. Preparation began months in advance. Start-ups were selected by the corporate partners, briefed on corporate priorities, and received coaching including pitch dry runs and business-proposal reviews. EIC programme managers and senior EIC leadership attended, signalling the strategic importance the EIC places on corporate-start-up engagement.
The EIC committed to follow-up support. Selected companies can access the EIC’s Dealmaker Support to help negotiate and finalise agreements. The EIC will monitor progress over six months to capture tangible business impacts. That monitoring window is useful for early-stage pilots and commercial memoranda of understanding. It is short for complex industrial integrations or regulatory approvals that can take much longer to conclude.
The five Circles, corporate priorities and the participating innovators
Each Circle focused on a sector with a hosting corporate or group of corporates. Corporates provided reverse pitches that stated specific challenges and priority technology areas. The EIC shortlisted companies against those briefs and prepared them for technical and commercial conversations.

Energy circle with Galp
Galp invited six EIC-backed companies whose solutions intersect with energy system integration and industrial heat. For Galp, condensed scouting and technical assessment in a single afternoon replaced weeks of conventional outreach. The intent was to move quickly to questions of operational fit, data integration and pilot needs.
Galp’s innovation team emphasised that pre-briefed start-ups saved time because conversations focused on test requirements and integration rather than introductory discovery. Galp’s representatives at the event included senior innovation and renewables staff who could assess technical fit.
Food circle with Cargill and Puratos
Cargill and Puratos concentrated on fermentation, precision fermentation and ingredient functionality. R&D teams used the meetings to stress-test formulations, industrial compatibility and scale-up pathways. Food ingredients are tightly regulated in the EU and beyond, so early discussions about regulatory strategy and pilot-scale testing are critical.
Media and entertainment circle with imec and Tomorrowland
imec and Tomorrowland joined to evaluate immersive content, volumetric capture, XR and sustainability options for live events. Start-ups covered innovations from low-latency spatial audio to volumetric human capture and recyclable stage materials. Discussions aimed to map pilot opportunities for festivals and live productions where audience experience and logistical sustainability are both high priorities.
Japan circle with JETRO, Ajinomoto, Daikin and JX Advanced Metals
Hosted by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), this Circle matched European deep tech with Japanese industry priorities in photonics, advanced packaging, batteries, metal recycling and low-carbon heating and cooling. Japanese corporate teams used the Day to shortcut discovery and focus immediately on feasibility and integration.
Consumer goods circle with AB InBev, The Coca-Cola Company and P&G
The largest Circle grouped three global FMCG brands with wide manufacturing footprints and tight requirements for ingredient functionality, packaging and process automation. EIC companies pitched solutions ranging from battery-free sensors and water recovery to robotic automation and alternative ingredients. For these corporates, the value proposition is often scale, cost, supply traceability and regulatory compliance.
What the event achieved and what to scrutinise
The Impact Circle model concentrates three useful elements. First, curated matchmaking reduces time spent on irrelevant introductions. Second, technical and business coaching before the event raises the level of conversations so they can address integration and pilot requirements. Third, in-person meetings with both technical and procurement stakeholders help align expectations early.
That said, there are persistent gaps between pilot conversations and commercial deployment. Procurement cycles in large corporates can take many months or years. Industrial pilots often need capital, engineering integrations and regulatory clearances. Food ingredients require rigorous safety dossiers and sometimes approvals as novel foods. Hardware products require industrial testing, interoperability validation and supply chain assurance. EIC support speeds introductions but it does not remove these fundamental barriers.
The EIC says it will monitor outcomes over the next six months and assist with deal closure. That is appropriate for early stage milestone tracking. Independent verification will be useful to determine how many conversations convert into paid pilots and how many of those lead to commercial contracts.
Context in the wider EIC and European innovation ecosystem
The Corporate Partnership Programme is one of several EIC Business Acceleration Services. The EIC reports substantial activity in this area historically. Between 2017 and 2025 the programme ran dozens of Corporate Days and Multi-Corporate Days, and EIC BAS materials cite thousands of one-to-one meetings, hundreds of deals and millions of euros of follow-on finance facilitated through related programmes.
The EIC also highlights the Service Catalogue and ACCESS+ grants that subsidise access to third party services for EIC beneficiaries. That can be helpful for start-ups that need specialised support but do not yet have procurement or supply chain traction.
Technical and regulatory highlights worth watching
Several participating technologies point to important industrial transitions. High-temperature thermal storage like Kraftblock targets decarbonisation of industrial heat. Magnetocaloric systems and refrigerant-free heat pumps address the need to replace high-GWP refrigerants. Precision fermentation companies like Melt&Marble, Inbiose and NoPalm offer routes to reduce land use and deforestation pressure from traditional oils and fats. Sensors such as FaradaIC’s miniaturised oxygen modules can make bioprocess control more robust and more energy efficient.
Practical recommendations for participants and observers
Start-ups should use structured corporate feedback to sharpen pilot definitions and to cost pilots realistically. Focused MVPs and demonstrators reduce the friction to test within corporate environments. Corporates should treat pilots as learning investments with clearly defined success metrics and transition plans for scaling if pilots succeed. Policymakers and programme managers should continue to publish outcome statistics that distinguish between meetings, paid pilots and commercial contracts so that claims of impact are verifiable.
For journalists and analysts, the next six to 18 months are the window to test the event’s claims. Monitoring whether meetings convert into paid pilots and whether pilots convert into repeatable supply agreements will be a meaningful indicator of the EIC CPP’s effectiveness.

Closing assessment
The Impact Circle illustrates the EIC’s role as a convener. Carefully curated matchmaking and pre-event coaching raise the quality of corporate-start-up conversations. That matters because chemistry and a shared technical language shorten the path to pilots.
Yet the hard work remains after the cameras leave. Converting pilot conversations into industrial deployments requires capital, engineering integration, regulatory clearance and patient procurement timelines. The EIC’s six month monitoring and Dealmaker Support are valuable but they are not a guarantee of scale. Independent, transparent follow up on conversion rates would strengthen claims of impact and help the ecosystem learn which formats most reliably produce commercial outcomes.
For now the best verdict is cautious optimism. The format works to surface partnerships and to get technical teams talking. Whether it moves Europe’s best science onto industrial scale at the pace required by climate and competitiveness goals will depend on subsequent steps and resourcing beyond this event.
